In an attempt to increase communication, we will doing a regular blog post and sending a monthly email and phone call informing parents of upcoming events at Messalonskee that might be of interest to our parents and community members.
Of particular importance to us is attendance at our parent-advisory meetings. We welcome all community members interested in attending to take part in these meetings regardless of whether or not they have a student at the high school. As principal, I utilize these meetings to share information and get feedback on what we are doing at MHS. These meetings, and the feedback we receive, influence what we do for kids at Messalonskee. An example of an approach directly impacted by Parent Advisory meeting feedback was the dual-reporting system we have adopted at MHS (reporting course grades 0-100 in PowerSchool, and certifying standards 1-4 in Empower). These meetings helped inform our belief in the necessity of keeping the dual grading system at MHS to provide clarity for our students as they move beyond our walls to the world of college and career.
On December 8th we will be hosting our next parent advisory meeting (5:30, MHS Library). Topics that will be discussed include our move to a 5 period block schedule for next year (currently we have a 4 period block schedule), the implementation of a YES (Year-End-Studies) program, and future meeting topics including course registration and the RSU18 budget.
As is the nature of life, things move quickly, and our semester is quickly coming to an end. After this week, not counting our final exams, there are 19 instructional days remaining! Please join us in talking to students about the importance of keeping their grades up and working hard over this last month of the semester. If you have questions, need assistance, or simply want to verify how things are going for your child don’t hesitate to call and speak to a teacher, counselor, or administrator directly. The guidance direct-line is 207-465-4989.
