The following message was sent late this morning to students and parents at Messalonskee Middle School, High School, and Williams Elementary in Oakland.
Messalonskee High School went into a lockdown at approximately 10:57 after being warned by workers on the roof of a sound that resembled a gunshot from the woods. The school was immediately put into a lockdown while the School Resource Officer and local Police searched the premises. Messalonskee Middle School and Williams Elementary School went into a “shelter in Place” lockdown (i.e. lock out). State Police, Fairfield Police, and Oakland PD responded, searched the area, and ultimately determined that there was no threat. Students were removed from lockdown at 11:10 and the school was taken out of “shelter in place” at 11:30. Local PD will be maintaining a presence in the area for the remainder of the day.
Should you have any questions about the incident please contact your child’s school.
Although we hate to have disruptions to our school day, today is a reminder to us of how important it is to have safety protocols in place just in case. You should know that the thorough execution of our safety plan on the part of students and staff, as well as the tremendous response from local and state police, is a strong indication of the work the RSU18 district has done in this area.
