On Global Youth Service Day, April 11th, twenty students from the Messalonskee High School Greenhouse Garden Club went to the Atwood Elementary School to help end childhood hunger. They constructed six raised garden beds outdoors and then visited primary classrooms to start vegetable seeds to put into the raised beds as the weather gets warmer.  This is called the Little Seedling Project. Funding for this project is a result of a Sodexo youth led grant written by Kristy Prelgovisk along with money from the Maine Commission for Community Service. Materials were purchased at Home Depot along with a Walmart donation and some of the seeds were donated by Johnny’s Selected Seeds. “Everyone who helped out with the project was working hard and having fun and you can’t ask for anything better than that.” Prelgovisk said. Planting Information was sent home with the elementary students in hopes that they will create their own backyard garden this summer.
