Olympian Julia Clukey visited Messalonskee High School the second week of school. For us, it was an amazing start to the school year with one of Maine’s finest examples of what someone can accomplish with hard work, perseverance and a tremendous drive to succeed. For Julia, as it turns out, it was her representative called “the best sendoff she could have had”.
Clukey spoke to our students about not only the hard work and perseverance needed to get to the top in any endeavor, but about how “normal” she was when she began her Olympic journey. Although she championed the idea that effort and goal-setting is key to success, Clukey told the students that “any one of you” could be in a similar position with the right drive and passion. One student told me after the talk that she was moved by the message stating “She is so normal, and spoke to us about how we all could be in her shoes if we worked that hard; I loved it!”.
Just five short days after presenting at MHS Clukey was off to Lake Placid, NY where she will begin her run to the 2014 Winter Olympics. Cluke’s schedule can be found at: http://clukeyluge.com/schedule/.
